Results - Wigmore Hill Climb October 7th 2007
An An early mist cleared a short while before the event commenced. It seemed calm and with the sun now shining there was anticipation of some good quick times for the 1350 yard climb of the 1 in 8 average gradient of Hollingbourne Hill in Kent. A good field of 60 had been received. A figure that had only been surpassed on 4 occasions in its 32 year history.
Favourite was last man off Bill Bell 2nd in 2006 going on to win the Catford and tie for 1st place in the Bec event. His main opposition this time was to be Pete Tadros winner in 2004 and a winner the morning before of the Kingston Wheelers Climb. A whisker slower had been Ben Pochee a new name in hill climbing circles.
Now Bell was back to try and go one better in this event. He did. It had looked like a good morning yet Bell’s winning time was 9 seconds slower than his ride the previous year. A light head wind making the difference. Pochee turned the tables on Tadros to take 2nd place.
A super ride by 15 year old Barney Reed won him the Juvenile prize and 12th place. A time quicker that the best Junior Robert Bordi who was a place behind. Best Espoir prize went to Jason Weale who also went away with an award for coming 8th.
Deborah Percival took the best Lady award for the 3rd consecutive year. Colin Birch making a comeback to climbing was more than pleased to be best of the 23 Vets on the card and with it a prize for 7th place. Not content with that he led in the winning Velo Club Elan team.
Bell made off with £50 and Kent CA Championship. Other carrots dangled which included £250 put up by HQ host Simon Hill for the winner to be inside 3 minutes went begging. 40 prizes in total were on offer for this popular Kent event.
The number of clubs now using this event as their domestic championship has risen to 10. That is seen as a great help in bringing in entries.
